About the role


Robert Half is searching for an experienced Sr. Payroll Tax Accountant or Supervisor to join our Full-Time Consulting Practice. The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting payroll tax accounting functions to ensure compliance with payroll tax management and administration. This role will serve as a key liaison between the organization's accounting, tax, and audit teams and the tax authority.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end payroll tax compliance across federal, state, local, and international jurisdictions, including filings, reporting, and remittance
  • Oversee W-2 processing, reconciliation, and correction filings, ensuring alignment between payroll, general ledger, and tax reporting
  • Manage complex multi-state taxation matters, including income allocation, reciprocity, jurisdiction-specific rules, and expense reimbursement implications
  • Serve as primary liaison with tax authorities (IRS and state/local), handling notices, resolving discrepancies, and supporting audits
  • Administer state programs (paid leave, workers’ compensation, labor reporting), ensuring accurate deductions, contributions, and compliance
  • Maintain payroll tax systems and financial accuracy, including tax table updates, invoice reconciliation, and general ledger entries

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Active CPA license (or in process) required.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience, including at least 2 years in a public accounting firm.
  • Solid understanding of financial controls and reporting mechanisms.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively on cross-functional projects.
